Gioconda de Vito, violinist: born Martina Franca, Italy 22 June
1907; married 1949 David BICKNELL (died 1988); died Rome 24
October 1994.

De Vito had first come to Britain in 1947 to make gramophone
records and it was at the HMV studios that she met the recording
manager David BICKNELL, whom she married in 1949, after which
time she settled in this country in Loudwater, a village in
Hertfordshire. She subsequently made many concert appearances
throughout the UK, while still continuing to play in Europe.

Britain's favourite Italian: Obituary of Gioconda de Vito (677)

De Vito was in London in 1939 to buy a violin. When she came to
Britain again in 1947, to record for HMV, she was a mature artist
and caused a sensation among the congnoscenti at Abbey Road
Studios, including her future husband David BICKNELL. Her British
concert debut was at the Royal Albert Hall in 1948, playing the
Brahms Concerto. The following year she married BICKNELL and
settled in this country, becoming a favourite with the British
public. She was at the Edinburgh Festivals of 1948, 1951 and 1953
and toured Europe. In 1958 she served on the jury of the
Tchaikovsky Competition, giving recitals in Moscow and Leningrad;
she returned to Edinburgh in 1960, the year she visited
Australia. She never felt able to leave Europe for long enough
to tour America; after little more than a decade of international
acclaim, she retired in 1961 - still at her peak.

....

When she returned to London later that year to perform the Mozart
G major Concerto, The Times was again enthusiastic, writing of
her 'liquid tone, subtlety and flexibility of phrasing, acute
perception and complete technical control'. In 1949 she married
David BICKNELL, then head of the HMV division of EMI Records, so
naturally she began recording for that company.

Those recordings, have become collectors' pieces. She settled in
this country, eventually taking British citizenship.

By this time, Mosley and her husband, Mark BICKNELL, a banker
turned publisher who has recently relaunched Everyman books, had
decided to move back to England. The candle, however, is made in
Bombay; this will help keep costs down and undercut competitors.

Surnames at that period being seldom used, it often happpened that when a
father had several sons they were distinguished by some territorial
property which they owned. So Robert de Pavilly dropped his family title
on acquiring the manor of Bykenhulle through his wife, and thenceforth
called himself Robert de Bykenhulle. This is the origin of the name
Bicknell.

Probably all Bicknells are descendant from Robert de Bykenhulle.

Amongst the possessions of the Count of Mortain, natural brother of
William the conqueror, was the Manor of Bykenhulle beneath a hill of the
same name (from "Beacon Hill") 820 feet high, 6 miles South East of
Taunton, Somerset. He leased it in 1086 to William de l'Estre, another of
the invading Norman knights, with whose descendants it remained until
about 1240, when Johanne de L'Estre brought it as her dower to Robert de
Pavilly on her marrying him.

As time elapsed, Pavilly became anglicized to Paveley, and Bykenhulle to
Bicknell. At the establishment of the Order of the Garter in 1334,
Edward III nominated Sir Walter Paveley one of the twenty-five founder
knights.
